Mariana

Future is a word that scares people. However, in the definition of people who lived in war, it does not exist. All cascading effect of the war after years until now is something that limit a person. The limitation in a career also confronts the limit of dreaming and believing in yourself.

2017, when I finished my bachelor’s degree in architecture which started and ended in war. I found myself confronted with the word future, which was not existing during the destructive conflict in Syria as everyone used to live day by day waiting to survive. However, I tried to get into some volunteering association to refine my soul and be ready for all possibilities. However, deep inside myself, I wanted to continue my educational attainment, which needed preparation. I tried applying to several universities around the world. Here, I need to point out one of the major problems that even if you had faith and power to chase your dream, the financial situation limits you. Syrian families during the war suffered from a lot of things, starting from losing jobs to the worst which is losing a member of the family. Therefore, most of the citizens have low income or even no income at all that lives with the help of donation. In this situation, anyone can feel this overwhelming restriction. Coming to Italy was not planned at all, with the help of one of my relatives that immigrated to Switzerland « as the situation of 30% of Syrian », I was introduced to the association of « le Chemin de Solidarité avec les critiens d’Orient ». One of the respondents explained the association’s aim in helping the youth generation in proceeding with their studies, I was put in contact with the people that are friends of the association that helped me in applying process. It was a long enthusiastic process. That in the end, I can say here I am, living in Milano one year ago. I finished one successful year in the master’s degree program in Architecture at Politecnico di Milano. Now, I am continuing my studies, hoping to finish my degree next year.

I can conclude by saying this experience would not have been complete without the donation that people did to support it, besides the Italian community that shared their places with the Syrian student as part of the process. Making the word future clear for me after losing it during the past 10 years.

Mariana

(English text below) Le mot “avenir” est souvent source d’effroi.
